Clinical Medical Assistant Prep

Clinical Medical Assistants serve an integral function to keep the office of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly. Clinical Medical Assistants maybe called upon to perform direct medical duties under the supervision of a physician such as: collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. They instruct patients about medications and special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by physician, authorize drug refills as directed, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, draw blood, prepare patients for x-trays, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures, and change dressings.

Course Objectives

• At the completion of this course, students should be able to:
• Acquaint self with medical asepsis, disease, and infection control.
• Demonstrate proficiency in taking medical history, measurements of vital signs, basic physical examination, and assisting with minor surgery.
• Acquire knowledge in basic pharmacology, dosage calculation and medication administration.
• Acquaint self with diagnostic procedures.
• Demonstrate proficiency in performing laboratory procedures.

Clear Health Form including updated immunization record signed by healthcare provider is due mid-semester.   The cost varies and may be covered by some health insurance companies

Course Specific Information

All students are responsible for:

• Successful completion of random drug screening and background check.  Failure to take or pass the random drug screening or background check will result in immediate dismissal from the program.  (No refunds will be issued for the program.)
• Required health immunizations. Cost varies based on immunization status.
  • TB Skin Test
  • MMR (two are required within lifetime)
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B
  • Flu
  • Tetanus (optional but recommended every ten years)

Clinical Rotations

• Clinical partners have different health and vaccination requirements. These are the responsibility of the student and the cost is not included in the registration fee.
  Failure to produce documentation of positive health and vaccination requirements will result in termination from the program without a refund.
• Clinical rotations will be conducted during “clinic” hours, typically 7:00 a.m. -7:00 p.m. The last four weeks are blocked off on your schedule during which you will obtain your 96 clinical hours. Students are required to complete 96 hours of clinical externship to successfully complete the program.
• Clinical sites are assigned by the Clinical Coordinator.  Refusal of assigned clinical site may result in failure of the program.
• Students must attend 100% of total clinical hours.
• Transportation to clinical assignment

Certification 

Successful candidates of the program will receive a certificate of completion from Jefferson State and have the option to sit for the National Health Career Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification exam.

Registration can be completed via online or walk-in.
