The Jefferson State Debate Team is participating in virtual tournaments this year, competing against colleges and universities across the United States in IPDA (International Public Debate Association) debate.
At the Mendoza Debate Tournament, hosted by Lee College Sept. 19-20, new team member Jacob Davidson was a quarterfinalist in Novice IPDA with a 5-1 win/loss record in preliminary rounds.
At the Weevil Wars Tournament Oct. 2-3, hosted by The University of Arkansas at Monticello, team President Heaven Sheppard was a quarterfinalist in Junior Varsity debate and was ranked the fourth overall speaker in the JV division.
Davidson made it all the way into the final round in the Novice division of the Weevil Wars Tournament and placed second out of 41 debaters.
So far this year, the debate team has competed against teams from Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Wyoming and Alaska.
