Shelby-Hoover Campus, Health Sciences Multipurpose Room, 7:00 p.m. Birmingham native Sonia Sanchez is a nationally-known poet, activist, and educator most often associated with the Black Arts Movement. She is the author of over a dozen books of poetry, as well as critical essays, short stories, plays, and children’s books. Sanchez has been a professor at eight universities and has lectured at over five hundred colleges in the United States, and she was influential in developing Black Studies and African American literature courses. She has received the American Book Award, Robert Frost Medal for poetry, Langston Hughes Poetry Award, and Harper Lee Award, among many others. We present Ms. Sanchez in partnership with the Magic City Poetry Festival. A book signing will follow her reading.
